Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini is slated to visit Taiwan to meet with Lu Shyue-ching, CHT chairman and CEO, Oct. 28 to discuss the details of a possible agreement between the two firms on developing smart TV.
If the two sides ink a deal, Chunghwa could become Intel’s first global partner in telecommunications to develop smart TV, a new category of electronic devices connecting to the Internet and enabling interactive viewing experience.
CHT has been seeking to capitalize on the increasing convergence in multimedia transmission technologies by offering multimedia on demand services to its ADSL broadband subscribers.
MOD is an Internet protocol TV service, in which content is delivered to users’ televisions via the Internet, instead of traditional broadcast, satellite signal or cable television formats.
Otellini also visited Taiwan six years ago to sign an MOU with Lu, who was general manager of CHT at the time, on developing digital home and multimedia services.
Lu said Oct. 19 that his company would publicly explain more of the details of the possible tie-up with Intel after his meeting with Otellini later this month. (SB)
